Lattakia, SANA – Farmers in Lattakia province have resorted to replacing traditional open-air farming with greenhouse farming due to rising production costs, such as fertilizers and pesticides, and the scarcity of water and energy sources.
Greenhouse farming has become increasingly popular in the province, with farmers starting to grow vegetables such as tomatoes and cucumbers in greenhouses. They have now moved on to banana farming, which is relatively new to the region, but has proven in recent years its ability to adapt to the volatile climate that characterizes the coastal environment.
Planting in greenhouses provides protection for crops from harsh weather conditions and contributes to increasing production and achieving food security.
