The Umayyad Mosque in Damascus is inscribed on the Arab Architectural and Urban Heritage List
SANA NEWS -

Damascus, SANA – The Committee of the Observatory of Architectural and Urban Heritage in Arab Countries, affiliated with the Arab Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization “ALECSO”, included the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus in the Arab Architectural and Urban Heritage Register.

This recognition was granted during ALECSO’s tenth meeting held in Beirut from the 28th to the 30th of this month.

Director General of Antiquities and Museums, Dr. Anas Haj Zidane, said that registering the Umayyad Mosque on the Arab Architectural and Urban Heritage Register is an important achievement, stressing that the Directorate is currently seeking to register a number of Syrian archaeological sites on these lists.

Zidane noted that during the committee’s two-day meeting, in which representatives from more than 40 countries participated, about 15 Syrian heritage sites were proposed and nominated, but it was not possible to register all of them at once, so the Umayyad Mosque was approved to be the first Syrian site to be included on this list.
