Peru, SANA- Residents of the Peruvian capital, Lima, were shocked to find the Rimac River turning black again, after having previously turned red.

According to the Argentine newspaper Infobae, the phenomenon has raised concerns about its potential impact on the water collection process carried out by the Cidabal company, which treats and distributes drinking water in Greater Lima, leading to “contamination of drinking water.”

The National Water Authority (ANA) stated in a statement that specialized technicians are on a stretch of the river to collect samples from the tributary to send to an Inacal-accredited laboratory. The results will be reported to relevant institutions, such as the National Water Authority for the Protection of Natural Resources (OEFA), the Municipal Secretariat of San Luis Potosi (Cidabal), and local governments, the statement said.

This phenomenon sparked a major controversy in the region, and thus the situation warrants further investigation to understand the underlying causes and potential environmental impact.
