Washington, SANA-The death toll from the floods that swept through Kerr County, Texas, has climbed to at least 78, amid growing concerns about further flooding.
According to Reuters, County Sheriff Larry Leitha stated: “Sixty-eight people have been confirmed dead so far due to the floods in the Hill Country area, including 28 children.” He added that search efforts are ongoing for girls who went missing from a local summer camp.
“You will see the death toll rise today and tomorrow,” said Freeman Martin, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, also speaking on Sunday.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump declared a “major disaster” in the state of Texas—home to the affected county—and issued an official order to facilitate access to federal aid.
It’s worth noting that the Guadalupe River in Kerr County overflowed after intense and sudden rainfall on July 4th, resulting in widespread destruction.
