SANA NEWS -

Paris, SANA-The Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Audrey Azoulay condemned the Israeli targeting of six Palestinian journalists in Gaza on august 10th calling for an independent and transparent investigation of this crime.

The United Nations website quoted Azoulay as saying in a statement:” targeting journalists covering struggles is unacceptable and violates international humanitarian law”.

Azoulay reiterated the call to respect the security council resolution /2222/, adopted unanimously in /2015/, on protecting journalists, workers in media and their companions as civilians in times of war.

She added “Journalists Anas al-Sharif, Mohammed Qariqa, Ibrahim Zahir, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa worked for al Jazeera International News Channel, while Mohammed al-Qadi was a freelance photojournalist”.

According to UNESCO statistics, at least 62 journalists and media workers have been killed while performing their duties in Palestine since October 2023. This number does not include those who died in circumstances unrelated to their professional work.
