Miracle-working ex-Al Wasl boss Rodolfo Arruabarrena marked his return to the Arabian Gulf League on Friday night with his first training session at Shabab Al Ahli Dubai Club.
Arruabarrena, 43, landed at Dubai Airport late on Thursday after an agreement was reached to end ex-Al Ittihad tactician Jose Luis Sierra’s unconvincing three-month stint in charge. The Rashid Stadium-outfit sit seventh in the top flight with two wins and three losses, despite substantial summer investment.
They tweeted: “Argentine Rodolfo Arruabarrena has arrived at Dubai Airport and he will be the new technical director of Shabab Al Ahli Dubai Club.
“He is scheduled to take over the training of the team from Friday evening to replace Chile’s Jose Luis Sierra.”
The announcement about Arruabarrena also emphatically ended rumours about an instant re-hiring by Wasl. They, surprisingly, declined to renew the ex-Argentina left-back’s contract last term, even though finishes of second and third were recorded under him.
The Cheetahs also issued a statement that detailed their continued support for replacement Gustavo Quinteros. Only two wins have been generated from the ex-Bolivia defender’s five matches in charge, to leave his troops an underwhelming sixth.
“The club confirms the inaccuracy of reports that we have been looking for a new coach,” a statement read.
Arruabarrena was selected in July to succeed ex-Barcelona and Real Madrid icon Michael Laudrup at Qatar’s Al Rayyan.
Victory followed in August’s Sheikh Jassim Cup against dominant Al Duhail. But he quit the Lions last week in the wake of a 1-0 loss at Al Khor which left them fourth in the Qatar Stars League.

Arruabarrena’s stock in the AGL remains high.
Last term witnessed narrow defeats in the Arabian Gulf Cup and President’s Cup showpieces, plus a return to the AFC Champions League after a decade away. He further guided Wasl to a club-record 23 undefeated AGL matches from January 2017-January 2018.
Sunday’s welcoming of Ajman in the Arabian Gulf Cup should be his first match in the Shabab Al Ahli dugout.
